EUSA/JEPP Special Issue

EUSA and JEPP are pleased to announce the details of the procedure for the publication of the EUSA JEPP Special Issue arising from the 2013 Baltimore Conference. Below we give details of how papers will be nominated and assessed.

Who nominates?

The most important actors in the whole process are the discussants. Having read and discussed the papers, they know them best and they will be asked to nominate individual papers for assessment. Each discussant can nominate only one paper from the panel he/she has discussed. He/she however does not have to nominate a paper. Only papers that are or have the potential to be outstanding contributions to the field of EU studies broadly conceived should be nominated. Only full papers (not fragments or works in progress) can be nominated.

How will papers be nominated?

Once the conference program is finalized, a nomination slip will be prepared for each individual panel. This nomination slip contains the names of the paper givers and the titles of their respective papers. The nomination slip will be given to the discussant as part of his/her conference package, to be returned to EUSA at the conclusion of each panel.

The review process

Within two weeks of the end on the conference, the authors of the nominated papers will be informed by EUSA central office that their paper has been nominated and asked whether or not they want their paper to be considered.

First review phase: The papers will be distributed for a first round of reviews among the members of the paper nomination review committee, which is comprised of all EUSA Executive Committee (Excom) Members (incoming and outgoing), Section chairs, as well as the editors of JEPP. Each paper will be assessed by at least two reviewers. Each reviewer will make a clear recommendation on the assigned paper(s):

  • A: definite candidate for publication in JEPP
  • B: paper has potential, but not yet fit for publication
  • C: not appropriate for publication in JEPP

Second review phase: Following these recommendations, each paper will be assigned a score based on the rankings of the reviewers. After the papers have been brought into an ordered ranking, 8-10 papers with the best rankings will go through   JEPP’s  peer review process ( in this case, one external reviewer for papers with an ‘A’ nomination; for nominations with no clear ‘A” recommendation, two reviewers be consulted).

It is planned that the review process will be complete by the end of summer 2013 with publication in iFirst in autumn/fall or late 2013, with hard copy published early 2014.
